Default Default Date Format in Excel

Oh, for the days of Quattro Pro.
When I enter a date into Excel into a blank cell as 3/4, Excel insists on
displaying it as 4-Mar and not 3-4-2009. The numeric format is set as the
default under Control Panel - Regional & Language Options - Short Date /
English (United States). All of the cells in the column prior to the blank
cell are also formatted as numeric date.
What to do?
