Default Entering symbols +, -, = as text instead of as functions

I need to be able to enter the symbols + - = as text in a column to
indicate gain, loss, and neutral. How do I ensure they are treated as text
and not functions?

Format the cell as text before entering the symbol, or precede the symbol
with an apostrophe (which will not show in the cell).
