Default Leading 0 in Mail Merge document

When i am trying to do a mail merge and 1 of the columns has all of the zip
codes, the labels, once the mail merge is complete, only shows 4 digits for
those zip codes that start with a 0. How do i get the word document to pick
up the leading 0 from the excel document. I tried custom formatting it for 5
digits as well as formatting it as a zip code. I am using Microsoft Excel
2003.
