the network i had this problem with was a linux network running office
applications (don't know the full story) but we "overcame" the problem with
the following solutions -
1) changed all our file names to 8 or less characters with no spaces or
symbols
2) SAVED regularly
3) complained the IT guys (not sure they actually did anything)

other than that, the only option that i know of, is to copy the file to your
local machine, work on it and then copy it back to the network ... just
don't get confused as to which is the latest file and don't tell your IT
guys i told you to do this! :)
