Default Excel 2007 - Highlights & Date Format not saving/displaying correc

Every time I highlight anything in an Excel worksheet and then I save it I
get the Compatibility Checker Message. When I close it and come back in, it
adds words and extra highlights. This has been going on for a long time and
with the kind of work I'm doing, I cannot have this.

The next issue is when I format and save cells in date formats and either
re-open it or email it, the cells no longer display in the date format.

I work in desktop support and we are currently saving in the 97-2003 format.
I have checked all the Excel settings and have found nothing askew...please
help.
