Copy - Paste problems

I use Office XP Pro. Sometimes, while using excel, when I copy cells either
by using the Copy - Paste commands or draging the cell or cells down or up it
takes longer than usual to paste the cells, then the size of the Excel file
increases dramatically and scrolling up or down the worksheet slows down
considerably.

Any suggestions.
