Default Status bar disappears when restoring screen size

Windows XP sp2, Excel 2003 sp3. My Materials Manager has three physical
screens on his desk: his laptop (screen 1 to the display driver) and two 19"
LCD monitors (together seen as screen 2 by the display driver with a 2560 x
1024 resolution). When he has the Excel window maximized over the entiire
2560 x 1024 area, the Status Bar appears properly and all is wonderful. When
he restores the screen to only one of the physical montiors (effectively 1280
x 1024), the Status Bar disappears. According to him that never used to
happen, it would stay no matter what he did. Any clues on where to start
digging?
