Default file keeps opening as read only

am using excel xp2003 - I keep saving a spreadsheet without the read only box
checked .... but when I open it later for editing it opens as a read only?!
I have no problems like this with other applications in the office suite and
there is no read only property in the folder structure?

What can I do to stop this other than keep saving "saving as" and renaming
the file?

Perhaps the excel file is stored as read only file. Right click on the excel
and then select properties form the drop down.

Now see if read-only check box is not selected, if it is unselect that. The
excel should work fine.

Thanks yours ... if you read my text again you'll find that I make sure to
leave the save as read only box unchecked. And I do go back and check the
properties to make sure that box is still unchecked BUT when I open the file
it opes as read only?!

Sal

Are you getting a message when opening the workbook?

What is the exact message you are getting?

Are you opening files from external media like a CD?

Or...................

When you are working on an Excel workbook(file) Excel will create a
temporary copy of that file.

Generally when you close the file the temporary is deleted.

Sometimes it is not.

Then you will get the "this file is locked for editing by username".

Most times a re-boot will clear it up but sometimes you must clear your Temp
folder and/or the folder

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
