Default Viewing problem

when I tried to open my files to update, tab says "ready" but all I have is a
blue screen with usual toolbars and such...can't see data, update
data...nothing. Documents were created on another computer, transferred using
thumb drive and I have opened them and worked on them previously on my own
computer. Actually, last time opened from thumb, I copied to hard drive in
case I had future problems thinking maybe it was thumb drive issue and I get
same view when I open those files. I am using Excel 2007; the original files
were created on previous version (97-2003). If I just click on the file and
print w/o actually opening it, it prints my previously saved data. I am
guessing I have forgotten a simple step - any suggestions?
