column d contains peoples names Column n contains F or is blank I want to highlight the name in column d if the corresponding cell in column n is blank |

Conditional Formatting
Select your range (D1:D9999, say)
With D1 the activecell Format|conditional formatting Formula is: =n1="" You could also use: =n1<"F" since you only use F or blank.
