Default free pre-installed Office interfers with Office 2000 professional.

Office Home/Student Trial was pre-installed on my laptop. I installed Office
2000 Professsional for my actual work.
Now at end of Trial period, find that many of my Excel spreadsheets were
saved in the Office 2007 mode and I can not retrieve, though I can view the
data.
Any help for this beyond spending hundreds to buy new software I do not
need. Window Office 2000 Professional is fine for me.
