Default Page layout - page setup - items disabled

I am trying to control page breaks and the print area of a worksheet. When I
access the page layout menu, page setup area, the print area butons is
diabled. Additionally I cannot set the print area, columns and rows toprint
at the top and side of each page and I cannot move the automatic page breaks.
Why is this disabled and how do I enable it?

Lots of things are disabled if you use File|Print Preview then clicked page
setup.

Try going through
File|page setup
directly.

Default Page layout - page setup - items disabled

Sorry - I was not clear in my first posting. I am using Excel 2007. I do not
have a File | Print menu. If I choose the Office Button, I can select Print.
This gives me Print - Quick Print - Print Preview. Selection 1 or 3 will not
let me use the print range input field, the rows/columns to repeat fields. If
I choose Page Layout from the ribbon and use the Page Setup area, the Print
Area button is disabled, and the Print Titles buttons is active. If I select
Print Titles a dialog opens but I am not able to change the rows or columns
repeat input values and they are blank.

I received another worksheet from a 2003 version and when I open that
worksheet in compatibility mode, these buttons work fine. It seems to be
related to the Excel 2007 sheet. I am trying to find out what check boxes,
controls, or options control whether these buttons are on or off.

I thank you for trying to help me and hopefully this is clearer. Where do
you think I should look?

Are you actually in Print Preview mode?

If so, go into setup from FilePage Setup

I am not in print preview mode. But considering the suggestion, I tried that
as well. Same result. It is as if these buttons have been turned off
purposely.

Now for what I discovered and the resolution..... when I do print this
sheet, it prints 6 pages when there are only 3. The data on the other 3 pages
is made up of some of the columns on the first three pages but without
formatting. Like a ghost set of pages. I checked further and found that the
"ghost data" was located on worksheet 2. I was only using worksheet 1. But I
had copied materials into this sheet using copy and paste CTRL keys. After
deleting all the data in worksheet 2, I was able to print properly on
worksheet 1.

I do not know what caused the information to be placed on worksheet 2, as I
am almost positive I pasted only into worksheet 1. But I guess it was user
error. My bad.

I still do not know what data if any, on worksheet 2 was disabling the
printer functions but now it seems to work fine.

I still appreciate your time.

Now back to work for me. Thanks again.

Default print area disabled

I had the same problem, until I realized that I did not set up a printer. Once you have a default printer, you can set print areas
