apparently i like to use file names longer than excel likes to see - how do i
add characters to the allowable file name length in excel 2003?

Your file names are over 218 characters long? (including the folder path)

should have been more accurate - it tells me its either too long or improper
symbols are being used - doesn't happen all the time, and i don't use the
disallowed symbols, but still get the error message - sometimes i can rename
the file after just getting it to save, sometimes i can't open it again once
i rename it. sorry about the confusion -i'm a nubie.

Why don't you give us an example of the file name that Excel rejects, and
the error message you get. That will make it much easier to discern your
problem.

file name example: CAT U929794 Falk 600MDX ABL921B A12664 Quote 5-20-08

error message:
make sure the specified file exists.
make sure the folder that contains the file is not read only.
make sure te file name does not contain any of the following characters
<?[]:or*
make sure the file/path name doesn't contain more than 218 characters.

sometimes they save and sometimes i have to remove the date or something
else before they will save.

So that name is 52 characters--56 when you add the length of ".xls".

What's the length of the path where you're saving?
