What do you mean by "This does not work"? What did you try, what result did
you get, and what result did you expect? -- David Biddulph "Jake" wrote in message ... This does not work in either 2003 on my desktop or 2007 in my notebook. Can anyone help? -- Jake |

When I type text into a cell and want to execute a return carriage to create
another line below the line I have typed, (are you following this?) I hit Alt/Enter(Return) to start that fresh line, but it does not happen. What do I expect? I expect a new line below the line of text. I have done this on my work computers which have Office 2003 and no problem. -- Jake "David Biddulph" wrote: What do you mean by "This does not work"? You've said what doesn't happen, but you haven't said what *does* happen.
Do you get a square symbol where you wanted your new line? Do you have "wrap text" enabled or disabled in Format/ Cells/ Alignment? If you type ABC[Alt-Enter]DEF in cell A2, what result do you get from the formula =CODE(MID(A2,4,1)) ? -- David Biddulph "Jake" wrote in message ... Nothing happens. There is no flash of light. No figures appear anywhere on
the spreadsheet and nothing disappears. Nothing happens. -- Jake "David Biddulph" wrote: You've said what doesn't happen, but you haven't said what *does* happen. Niek, yes. I ensure the cursor is at the right hand end of the text and press
Alt and while holding it I press return. Nothing happens. Nothing changes. Does it sound like this shortcut has been disabled/deleted somehow. By the way, earlier I thought David Biddulph was patronising. But I must admit my first question was not sufficiently clear. However, now I know he must be a jerk to anyone who doesn't know as much as him due to his continued ascerbic responses. Short smart comments are unnecessary. This is a help site. Not an "I'm smarter than you and let me tell you why" site. -- Jake "Niek Otten" wrote: Did you press Enter to finish the entry? -- Kind regards, Niek Otten Microsoft MVP - Excel "Jake" wrote in message ... | Nothing happens. I can assure you that people here are trying to help you, Jake, but they
need information from you to help you. What Nik was asking was whether you pressed Enter to complete the entry. The Alt-Return (or Alt-Enter) will include CHAR(10) in the formula input field, but until you complete the entry of the formula, either by hitting Enter (without Alt), or by clicking the tick alongside the formula bar, the content of the formula bar does not get included in the spreadsheet. Additionally, perhaps you missed two of my previous questions? Do you have "wrap text" enabled or disabled in Format/ Cells/ Alignment? If you type ABC[Alt-Enter]DEF in cell A2, what result do you get from the formula =CODE(MID(A2,4,1)) ? -- David Biddulph "Jake" wrote in message ... Niek, yes.
