I have a spreadsheet with some cells which are shaded cells and some that
have values in them. On each row i would like a cell that will calculate the
number of coloured or shaded cells (excluding the cells with text or values
in them). What formula could i use and would the formula work if i needed to
calculate colums as well?

I don't know what you mean by "calculate", but have a look at this

which shows how to add and/or sum by colour.
