when i open excel by itself with no worksheet i get error message (unable to
read file)

Try moving any files you see in the XLSTART folders to another location.
These are loaded automatically with Excel. Maybe one is corrupt

Hi,

You may find out the default open file. If it is corrupt, you can try
a tool called Advanced Excel Repair to repair the Excel xls file. Its
homepage is http://www.datanumen.com/aer/ hope this helps.
