Marcelo,

The new workbook task pane appears when I select "File, New. . ." from the
menu and also when I click on the "New" icon on the standard tool bar.

Do I have to do a registry hack to make it work the way I want?

Unfortunately, I've already done that and it doesn't stop the "New Workbook"
task pane from opening. Could it be that unchecking the "Startup Task Pane"
only stops the pane you would see when starting Excel and doesn't affect the
other task panes?

Any other suggestions?
