sign for a 1-digit number in a cell (Excel 2007)?

I was able to recreate your problem by formatting a cell to about 10 digits,
and then setting the width too narrow. Have you checked your format?

Perhaps the cell is formatted as a date, and your column is too narrow
to display it. Set the format to General.
