Default Probelm opening Excel speadsheets

Suddenly I am unable to open more than one Excel spreadsheet. The process
begins for the second file then stops. Nothing appears.
The task master shows the attempt (wkss) to open.
When this failed attempt happens I am unable to restart or turn off the
computer except by the reset button.
Things I have tried:
1) reinstalled XP.
2) reinstalled Works 2001 (excel)
3) run Norton virus check
For the life of me I can't recall any computer change that I have made that
might have triggered this fustrating and sudden condition.
I have limited computer knowledge.

Works 2001 does not contain Excel.

Excel is part of the MS Office Suite or a standalone.

Works 2001 has a spreadsheet application but it is not Excel.
