I need to get subtotals for the amounts in the "quantity" column, where "po
#" and line #" are the same.

There is a subtotals option on the data menu, help screens explain it well

Default subtotaling

My preference for this sort of thing is pivot tables. Put your cursor in the
middle of your source data ans select Data - Pivot Table. You can probably
just select finish when the wizard opens up as XL tends to make the correct
assumptions. Drag the PO #, Line # and description into the left hand column
ad put the Quantity in the middle. There are also a number of great auto
formatting options.
