Default file won't open, endless loop, autorecover

I had several excel files open. They were originally in excel 2000. Two of
them I saved and they are now Excel 2007 files. The third one isn't. I don't
remember exactly what happened, but I had to shut down excel via one of the
dialog boxes that come up when you try to shut it down and it won't. This
caused Excel to autorecover my files (thank goodness--Word 2007 won't do
that!!).

I was able to deal with the first two files, which were already in 2007.
HOwever, when I attempt to save the third file, which is still in 2000 (and
so running in compatibility mode), I just get the hourglass. Endlessly. So
then I force the program to shut down again via the dialog box or the Task
Manager. Then the same thing happens again when I open it. I have run all the
Diagnostics. It said there was one problem, which it fixed. Well, it hasn't
fixed this problem.

I cannot delete the file via the autorecover dialog that comes up--that
option isn't available. I can't save it under a different name because when i
try to, it just gives me the hourglass again.

I don't know wht the problem is, but I really, really need this file. there
is tons of data on it.

Thank you for any help you can provide.
