Default Excel will not save all the latest data and formatting

I have a spreadsheet of a about 40 columns and 600 rows of data and
calculations. I am recently getting the message "Excel could not save all the
data and formatting you recently added"

I can close the worksheet, but 80% of the latest work is not retained. I
have had far larger files without this headache.
