I keep getting the message "Cannot shift objects off sheet" when I try to
reduce a column width. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

I had this problem when I a cell off to the right was formatted in some way
(though I'm surprised it affects your ability to size columns).

You could try deleting the right most columns that you are not using, in
case they contain some formatting that you didn't know about.
