Default Requesting virus scan

In XP, when I open an Excel (or Word) file, the above message appears
below the status bar and there is a delay. What is happening? Can it be
disabled?

Alan,

Sounds very like Norton Antivirus.

If you really want to disable it try removing the MS Office plugin from
Norton Antivirus options|General
