In XP, when I open an Excel (or Word) file, the above message appears
below the status bar and there is a delay. What is happening? Can it be
disabled?

Thanks,

Alan,

Sounds very like Norton Antivirus.

If you really want to disable it try removing the MS Office plugin from
Norton Antivirus options|General
