Default Why does Excel change a date into a formula?

I am trying to enter in a date, let's say 7/7/07 into a cell. Excel is then
taking this date and putting an = in front of this date. It is also
replacing the 07 with just a 7. I have tried formatting the cell as a date
format and the result is if 7/7/07 is keyed in, it drops the 07 for 7 and
returns 01/00/00. It is still putting the = sign in front of the numbers
like this is a formula.

I know if you put a ' in front of the date it will not do this, but I am
trying to use the date as a basis for another calculation...7/7/07-28.

Can anyone help with this? It only does this on certain spreadsheets.

On the spreadsheets where this occurs, select:

Tools/Options Transition
DESelect "Transition Formula Entry"

Toolsoptionstransition, deselect transition formula entry
in fact deselect any check marks since they all can give you hiccups later
on

By using this (from Lotus 123) it tells Excel to divide 7 by 7 by 7 just
like you would enter

=7/7/7
