Default cell format doesn't take place

I have a formula that subtracts one cell from another. For example:
$10,000 - $4,000 = $6,000. However, in the cell with the answer ($6,000), it
displays as 6000. I tried changing the cell formatting, but no matter what I
do, the "sample" doesn't change. It insists on 6000. If I remove the
formula, and put in $6,000 manually, it will display as $6,000. Am I missing
something?
