Default Excel 2000 shuts down when attempting to save a file

Multiple users in our office have experienced an Excel 2000 problem. When
they attempt to save a file, Excel shuts down. The file cannot be saved.
Excel creates a new file of an unknown type that cannot be opened.
This appears to be connected to one spreadsheet that several people copied
and modified.
This acts like a virus spreading to PCs that opened this same original file
or various files that contain portions of the original file.
Our virus scan software says there is nothing wrong.
Using the office repair disc works temporarily, indicating a virus may be
reloading itself.
