Default Count # of Saturdays in a month

Excel 2003. I am looking for a formula that looks at a range of cells that
have the days/dates of the month and will count just the saturdays in any
given month. The cells with dates are formulated to have the actual weekday
name I.e "Saturday, Jan 26, 2008". The "countif" and "sumif" functions do not
seem to recognize the "Saturday" letters even when using the*. Any help would
be greatfully appreiciated.

Try this:

Dates in the range A1:A10

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A10<""),--(WEEKDAY(A1:A10,2)=6))
