I copied an entry from project management software we use called ClearQuest,
and pasted it directly into an Excel cell (after pressing F2 to make the
formula bar active). The entry is 312 words, and 1630 characters.

On screen and on the print preview, only the first 180 words and 941
characters of the pasted entry are visible. However, if I put the cursor in
the cell, the entire entry is visible in the formula bar.

Sorta truncated, sorta not. Anyone have any ideas on what would cause this
behavior? Is there a cause, or is it just a one-off fluke?

From Excel (2003) help on limits:
"Length of cell contents (text) 32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a
cell; all 32,767 display in the formula bar."

If you add alt-enters (to force new lines in the cell) every 80-100 characters,
you'll be able to see more than the limit documented in excel's help.

Wow. That's a GREAT answer. I've noticed that if I paste something from Word
(or other app) with blank lines or paragraphs in it, Excel accepts and adds
blank lines to the text in the cell. I've often wished I could do that
directly in Excel, and now I know how.
