Default "Not a valid win32 application"

It seems that my Office 2007 Excel codes things in a .xlsx format and mt
older Office 2000 Excel codes it's files in a .xls format.
So, when I click on a file that I created with Excel 2000 a popup occurs and
tells me that it's not a valid win32 file.
How can I fix this problem
