Default change autofilter behaviour?

the autofilter is for drilling down into your data by selecting a smaller
range. for some reason the default autofilter in excel 2007 instead shows a
bunch of options at the top including even "sort by colour" and it's main
purpose, selcting a sub range has been depreciated and made more difficult to
use. it now takes many more clicks to select a range... dates get divided
into years, months and days with check boxes on all of them. you have to
uncheck "select all" before you do anything. is there anyway to have a
sensible autofilter like in excel 2003 or are we stuck with this dreadful
interface forever? my beautiful excel is ruined
