Default Enable macros in 2007

I have a 60 day trial of excel 2007 and want to have a play with macros.

I have enabled the macros in the security settings and displayed the
developer ribbon bar but the option to record a macro is inactive. I even
tried to save the workbook as a xlsm file.

Any help gratefully recevied.

I've done all of that and the button to record is inactive.

Long shot but is the VBE installed? What happens when you click the "Visual
Basic" button on the Developer tab?

that button is also greyed out - does that mean it isn't installed then?

My guess it that the VBE is not installed. I can't be sure since I've never
not installed it. Unfortunately it is an optional component. I hope you
can re-run the installer and select it. It's under "Office Shared
Features".
