Default Locked for editing

I've been having problems w/ MS Excel lately. Most of the time when I try to
open an excel file, I would receive a message that the file is in use and I
can only open as read only eventhough there's no one using the file. I know
that no one is using the file because user id 'mtran' is no longer at the
company and yet I still got a message that she's currently editing the
spreadsheet. Any help would be appreciated.
