I think I recall that at one time Excel used to automatically display a count
of the number of rows resulting from a filter, in the Excel status bar at the
bottom of the screen. However, it does not do that for me now.

Is my recollection wrong, or is there an option that I need to turn on?

When your list has many formulas, the Status Bar may show "Filter
Mode"instead of a count of the visible records. You can use the Subtotal
function to count the visible rows.
