Default Can I align text in a cell so it displays just below the cell?

I'm trying to make a chart, but it doesn't have data in it - just the x and y
values. So instead of using a chart, I'm doing it by typing the x and y
values in the row/column, then using borders and lines to present the
information.

But I want the x and y values to show just between each cell, not at the
bottom or top of the cell.

For the x values, I merged all the cells and used spacing to get the look I
wanted. But that doesn't seem to work for the column values. So I tried
text boxes. They would work, except I can't make a text box smaller than a
cell so I can paste it between the cells.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Would it not be easier to simply use the Text Alignment options in the
Format¦Cells...¦Alignment dialogue? If you don't want to use this, or it
doesn't give you what you need, try:

You can merge the vertical cells in just the same way that you merged the
horizontal cells. Also, if you select the Word Wrap option on the Format
dialogue you will have some control over the vertical spacing of text using
Alt + Enter to insert line breaks within the merged cells.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions, especially this close to the holiday
weekend.

I tried your first suggestion, and I used the bottom alignment option, but
it put the text at the bottom of the cell, not really between the cells.

I did merge the vertical cells, but didn't try the line breaks with word
wrap on. I'll give that a shot.

BTW, I kept working with the text boxes and even though they overlapped one
another, it was with blank space, and without the line borders on the boxes,
the text beneath the overlaps showed through. So it worked OK, not great.
