Default Excel pastes as object into new workbook

When my friend copies an Excel range & pastes it into a new workbook it goes
in as an Excel object and all the formatting is lost.
Anybody have any idea why it pastes like this
Thanks
Bert

I believe you have two separate instances of Excel running.

Close one instance and open both workbooks in same instance.

Copy/paste should work properly.
