Default Excel - multiple windows one click to close them all

Excel opens in multiple windows. Each work book is a item on my taskbar. This
is fantastic - exactly what i want. (and just like everything else i use, ie
word...)

However - when i close any of the open workbooks - they all close.

WTF? And how do i fix it?

And i don't mean - "use the small x underneath the big x". I mean - where is
the setting to make it work the way i want it to, like word...

And if anyone has time: WTF were MS thinking? Is there a good reason for
this? I'd really love to know.
