Default Saving changes to a custom footer in Excel 2003

I'm updating an old Worksheet that was created in an earlier version of
Excel. I want to edit the custom footer, but I can't get it to save. I've
checked all the help documentation I can find, and tried all of the
suggestions; usually the change just disappears after I click OK. Sometimes
it shows in Print Preview but the old version is printed. If I close the
Workbook and reopen it the change is never there. If I get the change to
show in Print Preview and click CLOSE it's gone the next time I look at the
footers. How can I save the edits or even just delete the old footer?
