Default Excel internal passwords

Hi,

I've trawled around the net trying to find a decent description of how excel
internal passwords work (i.e.tools-protection-protect sheet/protect workbook)
but I can't find any decent information. I'm told that no matter what
password you use it it simply transformed into a 12 character string. Can
anyone point me in the right direction for a fuller explanation.
