Default Linking a pdf file from Excel

I need to link pdf files from Excel 2002. When I try to do this, it flashes
the adobe window but then closes it right away. The pdf's were created from
word documents and are for viewing only. I can't convert my excel file to
pdf as I need users to be able to sort the data using filters I've put into
the worksheet.

Is there a way that dates can be automatically updated in a protected Word
2002 document without unprotecting it?

I am trying to set up a library of documents for users but ensure that they
cannot edit them, I would like to have a 'valid on' date (which would be the
current date the document is open)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Just in case anyone else runs into this, it's a glitch in Acrobat, you do
need the latest version for the links to work. Thanks a lot for your
response, it led me in the right direction.....
