Default File in use error message on a non shared workbook

I have a unique issue with Excel 2003 SP2. I have two users that go to a
network share and open up a workbook. The workbook is NOT shared it is in a
common folder on the network drive that both users have rights to. The issue
is that if one person has the file open the other person can open the file
WITHOUT getting the following message €śFile in Use" message with €śRead
only" "Notify" or Cancel options. The second user should NOT be able
to open the workbook unless they get the message stated above. The second
user does not always get the message. I want the "File in Use€ť message to
come up every time that one user has it open and the second user tries to
open the file. Please help Any and All help is appreciated.

Hi
Did you get anywhere with this problem? I'm just about to upgrade to 2003
and hoped that this problem wouldn't occur as it's been happening here with
XP!! Maybe you got an answer from somewhere else....?

Marie
After upgrading both computers/users to office 2003 and doing all the the
office and OS patches it seams to have gone away. I just talked to both
users and they said that it has been working just as it should. Best of luck
