Default Optimization Tips

Does anyone have any optimization tips for using Excel with complex models.
These models cause Excel to run extremely slow and to sometimes crash and
corrupt the models. I am wondering if there are any Excel configurations,
which help to alleviate the amount of memory eaten up by all the background
processes in Excel and also any formula optimization tips.

Thanks.

Charles Williams has some great info on his site dealing with speeding up
calculations.
