Default unprotect check box in protected worksheet

I have a protected worksheet that has checkboxes (set up using validation
option). I have unchecked the locked feature in the protection tab for the
check boxes but they are still coming up as protected when I protect the
sheet.

What am I missing?

I'm not sure what "set up using validation option" means, but if you have a
linked cell that is locked on a protected worksheet, you'll have trouble.

Try unlocking that linked cell.
