Default general formatting numbers in excel

When I try to format a cell with the general formatting Excel inserts a
decimal point.
When I open the format box the general format shows an existing decimal
point and I can't get rid of it.

Instead of selecting GENERAL as the format, select NUMBER and set the number
of decimal place to display to 0.
