A document with the name "Book1.xls" is already opened. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the document are in different folders.
To open the second document, either close the document that's currently open, or rename one of the documents.

What's the root of the problem with this error message? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First of all, why do you have a document named Book1.xls? That is the default
name Excel gives to a new document. When you save, you should give the
workbook a different name--one that is meaningful to you and describes the
contents of the workbook.

Secondly: there is no "problem". Like it or not, this is Excel's quirk: you
CANNOT open 2 workbooks with the same name whether or not they are in the
same folder or drive. If you have a workbook called Book1 open, you cannot
open another workbook called Book1. The solution is to close the first one
before you open the second one. OR, you can rename the second one before you
open it.

Again--name your workbooks anything but the default name or you are looking
for mass confusion.

Actually, excel won't include the .xls extension on the file until the workbook
has been saved.

The default name for the first (unsaved) workbook will be Book1 (without that
extension).

Like Guy wrote, you can only have one file open with a specific name.

If you think you don't have book1.xls open already, then you and excel have a
problem.

Excel thinks you do.

Look under Window. Do you see book1.xls listed at the bottom--but you can't see
it on the screen?

If yes, try:
window|arrange|tiled
then resize/close that workbook

If no, try:
window|unhide
do you see it there?

If yes, then unhide it and close it.

You may have book1.xls in your XLStart folder and it could be opening each time
you start excel (hidden or visible!).

close excel and use
windows start button|search
to find that book1.xls and move it (or delete it if you don't need it).

Then open excel and test it out.

Hi, I have had this problem with Excel 97 and there is a fix for it that
works. I will have to look back in my old mail to find it. It may take a
day or two.

Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1) StartRun "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)OK.
2) StartRun "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case StartRun "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK.
