Default shortcuts ("abbreviations", autocorrection) with non-wordbreaking characters

Hello,

is it possible to define shortcuts with non-word-breaking characters?
Example: I'd like to have a shortcut
,la
which should insert a greek lambda sign. It seems that I can do this
only by autocorrection, but then I've to start and to finish the
shortcut with a word-breaking-character like
,la,
which is a bit awkward IMHO.

Any help much appreciated.
