Is there a way to choose either a symbol or color for points in a plot
according to a value in a field?

Here is what I'm trying to do:
I'm plotting depth vs porosity for some rock samples. In the file I'm using
I also have a 'zone' associated with each sample. I'd like to use that zone
column to determine either symbol shape or symbol color so I can see trends
for individual zones in the bigger plot.

Can this be done?

Thanks for the help

BDB,

since your desire a Chart to FIND the trend of points via *either symbol
shape or symbol color*, it may be easier if you re-group the series of points
BASED on their respective classified zone and excel can help to provide you
with auto-symbol that represent each zone.

Thanks Driller.

The file I'm using has almost 13000 entries. I'd like to keep all the data
together for other analysis rather than rearrange it. I was hoping there was
an easy way to do this that I could turn on and off with out moving around
the values. Perhaps not. Thanks for the thoughts.

Make a copy of the data, so the original is available for other analysis,
and so you can manipulate the chart source data in a way that best suits the
chart. You can copy - paste special link, so the chart data links to the
original and responds to changes.

Worksheet space is cheap, use it. Five minutes well spent with your data
will save you five hours of frustration.

An alternative is to set up your series in additional columns to the right
of the Y values column, and use clever IF statements to place either the
value or NA() in these additional columns. Each of these becomes a series in
the chart, each with its own formatting.

Here's an illustrated tutorial:
