Using Excel 2007, evertyime I refresh pivot table data, my charts lose almost
all of the formatting (ex. axis will disappear and chart type will revert
from lines to columns).
Most annoying problem I have when this happens is the primary Y axis moves
from the left side to the right side of the chart, and when I re-introduce
the secondary Y axis, it will appear on the left. How can I easily move the
primary Y axis back to the left side of the chart or switch the two axes?
I've tried choosing Layout - Axes to hide and re-display the axes but this
did not work.

To switch the primary and secondary Y axis in Excel 2007, follow these steps:

1. Click on the chart to select it.
2. Click on the "Layout" tab in the ribbon.
3. Click on the "Axes" dropdown in the "Axes" group.
4. Select "Secondary Vertical Axis" and then "Show Left to Right Axis".
5. The secondary Y axis should now appear on the right side of the chart.
6. Click on the secondary Y axis to select it.
7. Click on the "Format" tab in the ribbon.
8. In the "Current Selection" group, select "Format Selection".
9. In the "Format Axis" dialog box, under "Axis Options", select "Categories in reverse order".
10. The primary and secondary Y axes should now be switched.

If you are still experiencing issues with the formatting of your chart after refreshing pivot table data, you may want to consider creating a template for your chart with the desired formatting and applying it each time you refresh the data. This can help ensure that your chart maintains its formatting even after data updates.

Format the primary category (X) axis, and uncheck Value (Y) Axis Crosses at
Maximum. This moves the primary value axis to the left, and the secondary
should then be smart enough to move to the right of the chart.

Thanks for your reply, it reminded me of another post I read (which was
written by you also). I didn't quite understand it until I read this post and
searched for Value (Y) Axis Crosses, which is an option button in Excel 2007.
I did as you suggested, the secondary Y axis did not move on it's own, so I
then applied the solution from your other post, I temporary put in an
secondary X axis, selected Format axis for it and selected Value (Y) Axis
Crosses at maximum category. This moved the secondary Y axis to the right
side of the chart. But when I removed the secondary X axis, my secondary Y
axis bars were charted upside down! To fix this, I charted them onto my
primary Y axis then back to the secondary Y axis and they plotted right side
up again. After re-adding the secondary Y axis title, I was done and back to
my original chart.

The Value (X) Axis Crosses helped me with another issue I had, knowing how
this worked fixed it. Thanks again.

Unfortunately, I need to go through this anytime a new y-axis data item
appears after a refresh of my pivot table, I hope this is soon fixed in Excel
2007.
