Default Gray area of spreadsheet

It sounds like the columns are hidden.

Select the entire sheet by clicking the "button" immediately above row 1 and
to the left of column A. Goto the menu FormatColumnUnhide.

I'm working on somebody else's spreadsheet and there is an area to the
right
starting at column X that is dark gray. I can't change the formatting of
it
- so I'm not sure what command created it and how do I remove it. If
anyone
knows what I'm talking about and can help, thank you.
